Consejos de seguridad para chimeneas y calentadores

Con la baja de las temperaturas, las chimeneas y los calentadores se convierten en elementos esenciales y acogedores en muchos hogares. While they provide warmth and comfort, they also pose potential hazards if not used properly. Here are some practical tips to keep your family safe this winter while using fireplaces and space heaters.  

Fireplaces  

• If possible, keep a window open while the fire is burning  
• Ensure your chimney is checked annually if using your fireplace regularly  
• Always clean out ashes from previous fires before using the fireplace  
• Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear of anything flammable
• Use a safety screen or safety gate in front of your fireplace
• If you have a glass fireplace, keep your child away from the fireplace after use as it can take more than one hour to cool
• Put fireplace tools and accessories out of young children's reach. Fire pokers or fireplace remotes should not be accessible to children  

Most importantly, NEVER leave a fire in the fireplace unattended!

Space Heaters  

• Keep heaters on a flat, stable surface  
• Plug heaters directly into the wall. Avoid using heaters that are plugged into power strips or extension cords  
• Avoid blocking airflow and keep vents clear to avoid overheating. Ensure your space heater is not covered with clothing or other objects  
• Never use space heaters in wet spaces like a bathroom  
• Do not leave children unattended with a space heater  

Additional tips

• Ensure both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed properly and working
• When choosing a space heater, choose one that turns off if tipped over
• Keep a fire extinguisher on hand
• Educate your child as early as possible on the dangers of fires and space heaters and the heat coming from them
